Christians often say that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit—but what relationship does that language actually describe? It can become shorthand for taking care of ourselves, receiving divine guidance, or carrying a private source of spiritual help. Those ideas have a place in Christian theology, but the New Testament’s temple and indwelling texts are describing something more relational and more deeply Trinitarian.
In this episode, we trace the movement from the Word tabernacling among humanity to Jesus’ identification of his body as the temple that will be destroyed and raised. We then consider why the incarnate Son receives the Spirit, why the Spirit remains upon him, and how the Spirit-bearing Messiah becomes the one who gives the Spirit to his people.
That pattern opens a window into the relationships of the Father, Son, and Spirit. The Father sends the Son and gives the promised Spirit. The Son receives the Spirit for his messianic vocation and, once exalted, pours the Spirit out upon the restored people of God. The Spirit comes from the Father, testifies to the Son, and brings believers into the shared life described as being “in Christ.”
