Temple Refuge: A Dangerous Place to Be Safe - Episode 195

What does it mean to call the temple a place of refuge?

In this episode of the Refuge series, we look at the temple and tabernacle as more than places of sacrifice. In the Old Testament, sacred space is also associated with God’s presence, protection, purification, justice, rest, provision, and ordered life.

We trace that picture through texts including Psalm 46, Isaiah, Deuteronomy, Ezekiel, Jeremiah, and Micah. Along the way, we consider why sacred space can be both protective and dangerous, how refuge is tied to justice and the treatment of vulnerable people, and why the temple can become a false refuge when idolatry and injustice take over.

The episode ends in exile, where Ezekiel shows that even when the temple and land are lost, Yahweh himself can still be sanctuary for his people. That sets up the next step toward the New Testament questions of temple, Spirit, and being hidden in Christ.
