This Injustice Will Not Stand: Psalm 82 and the Divine Council -...

What exactly are the gods of Psalm 82 being judged for?

Michael Heiser's work helped many readers recover the supernatural worldview of Scripture and take the divine beings of Psalm 82 seriously. But identifying who the gods are doesn't necessarily tell us what they're doing—or why God is judging them.

In this episode, I'm sharing my presentation from the first Divine Council Worldview Conference, held in October 2026. My paper, "This Injustice Will Not Stand: Reframing Divine Rebellion Through Justice and Failed Governance in Psalm 82," approaches the psalm through frame semantics, a way of examining meaning through the participants, roles, relationships, expectations, and actions that make up a conceptual scene.

The argument isn't that Heiser's larger divine rebellion framework is necessarily wrong. Rather, it's that Psalm 82 itself foregrounds something quite specific: the gods have failed in their responsibility to administer justice. They show partiality to the wicked, neglect the vulnerable, and fail to rescue those under their authority. The consequences extend beyond individual injustice to the destabilization of the ordered world.

By comparing Psalm 82 with passages such as Leviticus 19, Deuteronomy 25, 2 Chronicles 19, Psalm 72, and Isaiah 11, we can see how judicial and royal-governance frames help clarify the nature of the gods' offense. We can also begin distinguishing what a particular passage establishes from what we bring into its interpretation through broader canonical and theological connections.

The presentation is followed by an audience Q&A that explores frame semantics more conversationally, including how cultural background informs meaning, the relationship between words and conceptual frames, and how this approach might help ordinary Bible readers engage Scripture more carefully.
